Criteria for New Moons
The following is the criteria (utilized by Qadesh La Yahweh Press) for
determining the beginning of a new month (moon).
If the conjunction of the sun and moon occurs between sunset and
sunrise, the night portion of the 24-hour day, this would indicate
that the conjunction occurred within the last day of the month.
Therefore the next sunset would mark the beginning of a new month
(moon).
On the other hand, if the conjunction of the sun and moon occurs
between sunrise and sunset, the daylight portion of the 24-hour day,
the next sunset would mark the beginning of the last day of the month
(moon). Therefore the beginning of the new month (moon) would occur
at the second sunset.
For more information see Rules for the New Moon and The Beginning of the Year
Footnotes
1 - The scriptural new year begins with the new moon of Abib from
Jerusalem as stated in Isaiah 2:3, "...for out of Zion will the law go
forth, and the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem." The new moon can be
predetermined as per examples in 1 Sam., 20:5 & 18. Days are
reckoned as beginning on the first date at sundown and ending on the
second date at sundown. Note Abib 1 is the beginning of year 17 of the 70th Jubilee cycle calculated from the time that the Israelites observed the first Jubilee cycle in 1386/85 B.C.E. For more information regarding
the Jubilee cycle please refer to our publication:
The Sabbath and Jubilee Cycle.
